In this time of record heat and disruptive politics, why would anyone go to Florida?
In response to this question, you would hear a unique personal story from each of the more than 120,000 patients and their companions who visit the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville each year.
The clinic campus is an island of peace surrounded by busy highways and new housing and commercial developments. Not far away on the Atlantic coast are huge shipping-container parking lots.
But Mayo’s atmosphere of shade and peace invites visitors to leave stress at the entrance.
Artwork, quiet sounds, natural materials and clean lines are everywhere.
A cafeteria, a snack shop and a restaurant are in the three main buildings, which are connected.
Medical professionals and patients from all over the world work together in spaces designed to lift the spirit.
Both privacy and communication are easy to find. Benches along sidewalks and hallways invite rest.
The realism that a patient hopes for in a hospital is supported here by the most modern medical science and, at the same time, by human compassion.
Near the elevators to the hospital wing is a quote by William J. Mayo, M. D. It might reassure anyone passing by, who is full of apprehension. It says,
The glory of medicine is that it is constantly moving forward.
Deda. thank you for this and I know you and Sam know it very well from a personal experience.
What a splendid postcard, Deda. The Mayo Clinic has always been known and important to me as we spent many years in Minnesota near Rochester where the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota is located. I was unaware that Mayo had a Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. Mayo Clinic is an outstanding institution with an appreciation for the importance of art in the healing process.
