America's Shakespearean Moment
A scene from Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony at the January 6th Committee hearing, June 28, 2022
It’s June 28, 2022. Today we watched in more than usual disbelief as Cassidy Hutchinson revealed in detail what many of us have long imagined. She described President Trump’s irrational behavior on January 6, 2021. It led his Cabinet to consider invoking the 25th Amendment and removing him from office before he could do more damage to the United States that day.
Consider the moment in Hutchinson’s testimony today when she described Trump erupting in anger while riding in his bullet-proof car, “The Beast”. It had just been explained to him, as if to a child, that he was not being driven to the Capitol Building to join the crowd as he had demanded. So he tried to grab the steering wheel and lunged for the throat of the secret service agent who told him he had to take his hand off the wheel.
The story Hutchinson evoked is Shakespearean. What would have happened next, had Trump taken the wheel and arrived on the scene of the simmering riot? Now we know how the President, the Roman Emperor, the mad King, fought to be there. In what role? Perhaps to preside at the hanging of his Vice President, his General, his royal nephews?
The more truth we learn from the January 6th Committee witnesses under oath, the more impossible it becomes to comprehend the huge number of Americans who still insist on the Big Lie. Of course its purveyors, including the Big Liar, will continue until it becomes unprofitable.
When the rubber band stretches too far it will either break or snap back. I’m hoping for it to break and everything can relax again. If it snaps back, it will sting, hopefully no more than that.
I'm hoping a talented Shakespearean like screen writer provides an outstanding version of the Trump WH years--one that depicts the mafia type presidency that existed!
So beautiful and insightful. Thanks
