For some time now, I’ve wondered why it’s not obvious in our culture that Democrats are for democracy. I think it would help if we capitalized the word Democracy every time we used it. Maybe it is capitalized when someone at a demonstration calls out, “Show me what Democracy looks like!”

On the other hand, the Republicans don’t seem too worried about their reputation as republicans. Can you picture them at a protest and someone calls out, “Show me what republicanism looks like!”?
Technically, America is a representative democracy. We’re also a federal constitutional republic. Both mean that we, the people, vote for officials to represent us in the government. But over the past half-century, by hook and by crook, the Republicans have fixed districts, voting laws, and the Supreme Court so that Republican candidates now choose their voters and disable the competition.
Every day, in their extreme reach for power and wealth, Republicans are violating our democratic voting system, the rule of law under the United States Constitution, and even the republic (where supreme power is supposed to be held by The People). I don’t think they’re republicans anymore.
The best organization to take this on is the Democratic Party, in solidarity, in full view of the world, full force. When you’re for all the people and not just some, and you see violations, you come down from the pedestal of leading by example. You fight for civil and human rights — for a culture of health, education and opportunity, and for the well-being of the Earth itself.
I think that gives Democrats the right to capitalize “Democracy”. Every chance we get.
Speaking truth, as usual. Great post, Deda!
