Our "Moral Moment" Is Now
Today hundreds of local Hands Off! protests across America will answer Cory Booker's passionate call
Like so many of us in the past weeks, I’ve been advised to practice good self-care so that when I do take part in political - democratic! - activities, I can be fully “in the moment” and fully effective.
To me, this has meant limiting my news reading to headlines and a few opinion-piece paragraphs, and then following up with phone calls, emails or letters to elected officials. I’ve not been ready to look at news videos or listen to sound bites.
And then — I heard about Cory Booker’s 25-hour speech. This week he told the Senate and the American people,
I rise tonight with the intention of disrupting the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able. … Our nation is in crisis: bedrock commitments are being broken … unnecessary hardship for our people … our institutions recklessly and unconstitutionally attacked.
These are not normal times … threats to the American people and American democracy are grave and urgent … we all must do more to stand against them.
Then he addressed his fellow elected officials,
Generations from now will look back at this moment and have a single question - where were you? When our country was in crisis and when the American people were asking for our help - did we speak up?

Booker’s 25-hour-long speech led the way in showing the importance of our presence, whether making calls, writing emails and letters — or taking part in today’s Hands Off! National Day of Action against the Trump-Musk attacks. Hundreds of groups will demonstrate.

My town’s public rally will be held at the Transylvania County Courthouse on Main Street in Brevard, NC, today, Saturday, April 5, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

There are many ways to support this demonstration today. It’s also a good day to write letters and emails or to make phone calls to elected officials, including those who are working to defend our democracy.
If you plan to be part of the rally in Brevard, you can bring your own sign. Or after 10:00 a.m. this morning, Saturday, April 5, you can pick one up at Bullwinkle’s on Main Street. Some examples:
I’m ready to be in this moment and to be counted at the Courthouse today. I heard Cory Booker say,
This is a moral moment. … Let’s get into good trouble.
“Let’s,” he said. Let us.
We will be there.
thank you for this reminder and for the information about Signs possibly being available at Bullwinkle's this morning.
