Our Two Fairy Tale Candidates in Transylvania County
... who want to not only sit on the school board, but to gobble it up
Once upon a time Little Red Riding Hood set off into the woods with food for her ailing grandma. “Don’t talk to strangers,” said Mom.
Now you might already know that this girl trusted the creature in Grandma’s clothes and was gobbled up by the Wolf. Maybe the light was bad in Grandma’s house.
Once upon a time in a rural mountain county in North Carolina, the people were getting ready for a School Board election. They hung out American flags, put up yard signs and planned to go hear the candidates’ ideas for better public schools, as usual.
In this story there are four candidates. Two of them are Democrats who have talked about updating schools with safe, dry, modern facilities, respectful teacher pay, and readily available mental health care for struggling students.
The other two candidates … nobody is sure where they are. They’re not mentioned on the local Republican Party website.
Rumor is that one is a Commissioner’s wife (!) who signed onto a national women’s club called Moms for Liberty and started a chapter right here. “Moms”, I’m thinking, “that’s great! “Liberty” is ok, too. I’m all for American.
We the people haven’t heard from candidate Tanya yet, but Moms’ website says their members “Fight for Our Children”. (I assume that means all our children.) It’s not clear to me what the “fight” is about but, of course, we sure do want to win it for the kids.
The Moms also “Believe that Power Belongs to The People”. Wouldn’t you think that Power over the schools belongs to elected school board officials? I trust Tanya to mean that The People here are actually the officials. It’s confusing.
She hasn’t talked much in public, except to say things like, “That’s how I got [my husband]. It was with my sweet tea.” (She once made a video for her husband’s campaign and must have thought this information helped make him electable.)
I’ve read that Moms elsewhere have already offered $500 bounties for information about teachers who shock them with the facts about American history. Tanya, I can’t believe you’d do something like this, right?
Also, Moms are working hard to clean up libraries. I hear they’re banning some books to make room on the shelves for their own books. These things don’t seem right to me, but they must know what they’re doing.
Tanya looks like she might be ok with our school books here.
The fourth candidate for school board in our county has planted a strange tattered flag in his yard.
I looked it up. It’s a Three Percenter flag. Three, because Three Percenters apparently think only 3% (well, 2.96%) of Americans fought the British in the Revolutionary War. This isn’t true, but Chris must believe it is. If he’s running for a local government school board, do you think I should remind him that his group is actually an anti-government militia?
I’ve heard second-hand that he says he doesn’t belong to this group because it’s not a group. I see on his Facebook page that he likes the 1911 Builders who like to build guns, the Second Amendment Rights, and the Second Amendment Supporters. Chris, I know as a School Board candidate you’re offering to oversee the schools for the good of all children, but are you sure you signed up for the right office?
I’ve also heard second-hand that he’s told people he wants prayer in schools. If that’s what he plans to work for as a School Board member, I would advise him to practice persuasive debate; he’s been escorted out of the audience at least once at a school board meeting for speaking out of hand.
At these meetings he might have thought he was exercising his First Amendment Right, although I see that’s not one of his favorite groups.
Chris has put a sign in someone else’s yard that makes passers-by wonder, what new party is this? The elephant looks Republican.
So you see, I’m giving both these candidates the benefit of the doubt. After all, they are offering to serve our county on the School Board.
Listen carefully. They will tell you they care about making our schools safe, dry, helpful for struggling students and up-to-date. They will say they will make sure all our children have good educations with the right reading materials to outfit them for success in tomorrow’s economy. They will use our taxes properly and wisely.
No one has said anything about keeping local government functioning for the public good but let’s assume they will do that, since it’s 100% of the job they’re applying for.
During a public debate, if someone in the audience shows concern, Tanya will promise not to talk with her husband who is on the Commission Board about any closed sessions of the School Board. And Chris will promise to keep his weapons hobby strictly for weekends.
They both will tell you, “Trust me, I’m worth your vote.”
And then Little Red Riding Hood disappeared down the Wolf’s throat.
Brilliant, Deda. And quite frightening.
