This week the autocrat of Russia bombed its democratic neighbor Ukraine. On the same day we moved into our new Democratic Party headquarters.
For me, this small staking of ground in our county gave me great hope. It took some of the power out of the shock of Putin’s brutal attack on democracy. In this small world Ukraine is our neighbor, too.
We each have a role to play in defending democracy wherever it’s under attack. Just as the Ukrainian people are following President Zelenskyy’s lead in defending their homeland, we too are called to defend democracy wherever we live. And that’s why I’m celebrating our Democratic Party Headquarters in my county.
This place is where so many of us will work together in 2022 to strengthen democracy at home. Postcards, phone calls, neighborhood visits, letters to the editor, donations, all these things help will our volunteers tell voters about our candidates.
After all, if you’re a voter and you live and have a job here, and if you find out there are people working hard for the well being of your family and for a safe, generous community, wouldn’t you vote for them?
But first, let us remember the Ukrainians. When offered US help in evacuating Kyiv on Saturday, President Zelenskyy said, “The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride.”
The fight is here.
Beth, thank you for this good news! I'll tell everyone.
