It’s late Spring. Raspberries are just beginning to form with the hint of a veil covering each one, native daisies mix with yarrow and pink sweet pea buds by the vegetable garden gate. And now the joyful common day lily!
Sam has planned our garden for color at every season of the year, starting with the soft white hellebore in January. Now in mid-June, orange dominates.
When we built our house in 2010 I designed the tops of both the Rabbit and the Robin Gate. Sam built them, adding splendid heart-shaped windows at grandchild peek-through height.
He covered the lower hearts with a little fencing so rabbits can’t enter the vegetable garden. One did manage to come in once. He lived there happily for a few days in the lower section where the underbrush makes a fine rabbit hideout. I think we finally decided to leave the gate open to tempt him out, which he did as quietly as he came in.
There's Rabbit fable and Robin lore in them there mountains. I love it!
