.....................we could start by naming THE SUPREME COURT "THE EXTREME COURT, FOR THE POLITICANS AND BY THE POLITICANS".
Women should have help fighting back" at ground level, where it all begins. They fight every day of their lives for what should rightfully be theirs. Equal pay for equal work; as an example, Like civil rights, there can be goals, laws and quotas but it still takes a village and God knows how much time. How far have we really come?? I'll stop here.... before I can't stop.
More and more the idea of a team seems to be the way to organize our outrage, to turn a feeling of helplessness into the kind of energy that fights back. I appreciate so much your mentioning this, Mary. It's time to organize in supporting people on the front lines. We all can talk about this!
This is quite an ominous problem. As many are saying, this will, once again, be a minority and poor person's problem. We know that, if you are rich and influential, you can get the medical care and privacy that you want, but what of the rest of us? And then, what will come next? No IVF for gay couples, punishment for miscarriages, etc. The Handmaid's Tale, here we come.
Beth, you mention The Handmaid's Tale, which I confess I couldn't finish when it came out, but want to try again. Has it occurred to you that Barrett fits that book to a T? As a Mother, perhaps? Someone who knows the book better than I could comment on this. Thank you!
Deda, I am so sad and angry. Young women are going to wake up to the world we grew up in - back alleys and coat hangers. What a shame - and what hypocrisy on the part of the "pro-lifers." All their blather about the "sanctity of life" but they can't do anything about children being murdered in their schools. And Barrett - that she would say at oral argument that the problem can be taken care of with "safe havens" - does she think carrying a fetus to term and giving birth is like making a cheesecake???
I sincerely hope you are right about legislation being passed - but I am not optimistic about it.
I like your description of Barrett's devaluation of pregnancy. I think you could call it tone deaf if I didn't know she has a more serious intention. About supporting legislation, it's more about creating our presence, which, in numbers, can make a difference in the end. Thank you for your thoughtful comments, Nona.
