Becoming Duchess Goldblatt...a memoir is strange and engaging...especially if you are a fan of Lyle Lovett and get to read his entries

Helen, it's nice going to the library again after a couple of years of isolation! I hope recommendations will keep coming in.

My favorite short book is On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. And I love those revolving displays on a specific theme at the library; I always take a gander and find at least one good book there. Thanks Deda and commenters for these recommendations.

Barbara, I'm so glad you reminded me about Ian McEwan, a writer I read a long time ago. Yes, about the library displays! I've gotten to looking at Staff Picks now, too.

As Cindy says, read all of Mark Salzman's books. The Soloist is one of my favorites.

At about the 250 page limit, I love Marilynne Robinson's Gilead (and everything else she's written), Laurie Colwin's Goodbye Without Leaving, and anything written by Lee Smith, Kaye Gibbons, and Clyde Edgerton - all three of the last mentioned are NC writers. Lee Smith's Blue Marlin comes in at 136 pages, and is a gem.

Alice, many thanks for your detailed suggestions for more reading -- or rereading, I've put one on hold at the public library and am looking forward to it!

Thanks for this Postcard! I am going to reread Lying Awake--maybe when I am lying awake. I am at an age at which I love rereading books. I am a different/same person now than when I read a book 40 or 50 years ago.

I love the way you place the great enjoyment of rereading, in your being a different person now. So many new possibilities.

Read ALL Mark Salzmans books. Lying awake one of my favorites. Glad you read IT! I need to check out the ending. Have forgotten.

First one I read was Soloists. I really like how he plays will all main religions and looks at it questioning.

Some are really funny.

Cindy, I liked The Soloist, too. He has a way with a short novel and psychological suspense in a way that's universal. Thanks for mentioning it.
