Judy, a library can be like a family with its own history. I sometimes wonder if, and hope that, the south Slidell library branch was rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina destroyed it.
I really enjoyed reading this and all about the history! I’m going to take this with me and walk around downtown. I also enjoyed blowing up the picture at the County Commissioner meeting and seeing how many I knew. There was the back of Sam’s head and Judith West ever diligent, and Ron Kiviniemi sitting there beside her. I live your Postcards!!
Love your stories and loved this post. Libraries around the country are not just for book borrowers, but serve as community centers. They feature speakers, entertain children, host book clubs, and show movies. When I was growing up in the suburbs of New York, we had a Bookmobile that would stop across the street from our house every Monday afternoon. We awaited its arrival with almost as much anticipation as we did the ice cream man! More recently, the Bookmobile was put out of commission since everyone could drive themselves to the library. (Alec Baldwin, an alumnus of our town, purchased it and moved it to his estate in the Hamptons) The town now has two beautiful public libraries that are still going strong. I LOVE libraries. Thank you for reminding me.
Linda, I love your attention to bookmobiles, as well as to all the activities a library provides. I think we sometimes take it for granted, it's so quietly just THERE. Thank you!
What a wonderful history! We bought our house in Brevard in 2006, and the new library had just opened. We were so impressed and it made us feel very good about the community!
Lovely story, Deda. I enjoyed learning more of what makes Transylvania County special. Newcomers like myself appreciate the care you took many years ago to make where I live today so much better. Our library is an asset to our community. Thank you for telling the story.
Great perspective on the rooms and public buildings we still use.
Libraries give us wonderful memories. Thanks for sharing.

Patty. I missed seeing Sam in the Commission audience photo! I'm glad you enjoy learning local history. It's fun imagining what was what. Thank you!

Love this post, Deda! Thanks for the reminder to visit the North Carolina room at the library to read more on local history, which I just love to do.
Barbara, it's nice to know that you enjoy local history. Wouldn't it be fun to do research up in the NC Room for a book? Maybe a novel!
What a great idea! I've been thinking about writing a mystery novel -- you've given me some inspiration!
👍😊

Helen, I often think that if we had to move to another community it would have to have first a library and then UPS delivery!

Ian, your newcomer's viewpoint is so meaningful to me! Thank you.
