Vote out these commissioners who think in simplistic terms. Vote in those who recognize “the business” of public education is to invest in the future of our Republic by ensuring our young people receive an education that promotes achievement of their potential as productive, informed, fulfilled and happy citizens.

Ken, thank you for offering a more fitting definition of "business" when it comes to schools. And your description of citizens is well worth making a reality!

Thank you, Deda. Again you have expressed the frustrations of many in a clear to understand way. I take issue with Commissioner McCall - educating our people (young or old) is not a business. Yes, these institutions have structure to spend funds allotted to them but they are not and should not be thought of as places to make money. Schools are public institutions that build minds to be creative and knowledgable to make our world better for everyone.

(A note: This comment was actually from Ian - a technical mix-up!)

But I want to say, this comment is so important because it seems our current Commissioners are running solely on the issue of spending less of the "hardworking taxpayer's money". They are being loyal to their Republican mantra, but I think it might not work this year when there are real human issues at stake!

Moldy classrooms and leaky roofs are NOT what are kids deserve! Deda's Postcard today is an urgent call to action. In my opinion our County Commissioners are simply not in favor of public schools. I'm suspect of their agenda.

Linda, your comment sent me to Google, where I found that the Republican candidate for NC Superintendent of Public Instruction, Michelle Morrow, has urged parents not to send their children to public schools, which she calls "indoctrination centers". These are crazy times. Stay calm!

Schools are NOT a business regardless of what the GOP is pushing in its rhetoric. Schools are a service. A service that pays big dividends in the long run. It’s an investment up front that pays off when today’s children become educated adults. Good luck in your very worthwhile endeavor of getting proper commissioners and boards elected.

JD, your comment makes me realize that it's time for us as a community to redefine "business" - and, definitely, "service"! It's a big job, but also very clear.
