Thank you for this letter. It is helpful in trying to understand the mindset of unaffiliated voters and supportive of the discussions that Democrats need to have with them.
Thanks you again for another thought provoking commentary. One reasons we have had such a hard time recruiting good candidates in Polk county is because potential candidates think they do not have a chance just based on the registration numbers. More registered Dems would help us get enthusiasm, momentum and good candidates! If ever there was a time to stake our political ground, like the french do, it is now!
Just to add another reason for voting unaffiliated- In our county, Henderson, there are some Dems, including me, who register UAF because there are no candidates to vote for in the primary otherwise. I would most likely vote Dem in the November elections. I have never voted for an Independent candidate for the reasons you mentioned. Thanks for your Postcards column. I enjoy reading them!!
You bring up the purpose of primaries. I remember in the 2022 primary some of our county's Democrats switched to UNA to help knock the Republican Cawthorn out the running. I wonder if they've switched back. ... Interesting! Thank you, Jan.
Linda, your comment about seeing the light -- this might be an moment in our history when we MUST support the one party (Democrats) that's positioned to defeat the party of the far right (Republicans). Someday the balance may return where there's room for UNA's.
Thank you, Deda, for such a thought full article. Well worth sharing.
Well said, Deda! I'm going to share this with my precinct members.

I have always appreciated Will Rogers' wonderful quote. Great article, Deda. I wish everyone" saw the light" this clearly.
